Volunteer – Education Day

Volunteer –  Camp Counselors for TLC- Applications Available January 2022

Due to Covid our 2021 camp is virtual.  Stay tuned for volunteer opportunities for 2021.

When In-Person Camps Resumes – To staff our residential summer camp for a week each June, SBANT recruits approximately 60 volunteers for Cabin Counselors to stay in the cabins with the campers and 6 Sidewalkers to help us provide our horseback riding program. Our volunteers range in age and experience from high school seniors to retired attorneys. Many college students with career interests in health care and education serve as volunteers. Volunteers must:

  • For Counselor Positions – minimum 18 years old & Sidewalkers – minimum 19 years old by June 1st
  • All applicants must be High School Graduates
  • complete an application
  • consent to a criminal background check & provide form to do so
  • be available for a 30 minute phone interview
  • agree and commit to our Code of Ethics
  • provide immunization records
  • attend pre-camp training in Dallas during the month of May (3 hours)
  • attend training at camp for a day and a half before campers arrive

The responsibilities of a volunteer counselor are to sleep in the cabin with their campers (3-4 counselors per 6 or 7 campers), assist campers with grooming and dressing, if needed, help campers get to their activities, and occasionally help with personal care, if needed. Counselors supervise campers during all times that they are not at a camp activity, and also provide a secondary supportive role during activity times, assisting Camp John Marc staff. Counselors are supported by a nurse who is assigned to their cabin, and generally by a nursing student as well as the camp doctor. No prior medical experience is required of counselors. The TLC volunteer staff generally includes on site and experienced camp director, two assistant camp directors, a child life specialist, a physical therapist and an occupational therapist as additional support for the cabin counselor.

If you are a person in good health who likes kids and isn’t afraid of hard work, this may be the most rewarding week you have ever experienced. Many of our counselors come back year after year. Please contact Julie Carter at camptlc@spinabifidant.org  if you have any questions about applying.  Applications are available online at  camptlc-sbant.com as well as additional information and an informative video!

If you cannot give an entire week, we have Bus Buddy Chaperone positions available for the ride out to camp as well as camper check-in day positions available.  Visit www.camptlc-sbant.com for information on these as well.

Other Volunteer Opportunities

We have events throughout the year that require volunteers to help run.  This ranges from being a board member, to being on a fundraiser or event committee, to helping with office duties.  We would also like to begin having interns or volunteers work on such things as the website, database issues and social networking.  If you would like more information on volunteering, please contact Robin Lee, Executive Director, at rlee@spinabifidant.org.  Thank you for your interest in supporting SBANT!
